Min says QR code mobile app may supplement paper passport

MOSCOW, May 26 (PRIME) -- A mobile application with a QR code may supplement the paper passport and its use will increase protection of Russians’ personal data and will be more convenient, Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev said on Tuesday at a briefing.

“We think the technology that has been tested as part of the digital passes enables us to believe we can launch a mobile application that will become an addition to the existing paper passport, which will make it possible in nine out of 10 cases not to show the passport, but use the mobile application instead,” Shadayev said.

The minister explained that the application will work like mobile applications that transfer payments via a smartphone. “Our mobile application Mobile Identifier will function likewise, when you can present a QR pass, like you used a digital pass, and your photo will be seen along with your data, and information will go straight to the information system,” he said.

Work with the paper passport is complicated and does not exclude mistakes and receipt of extra personal data, Shadayev said.

The ministry earlier suggested experimenting with the mobile application instead of the passport from July 1 till December 31, 2021 in Moscow.
